There was a time when I thought I needed long workouts to get real results.

I thought more time meant more calories burned, more toning, and more progress.

But over the years, both personally and professionally, I learned that longer is not always better.

In fact, some of the best workouts are the ones that challenge more muscle in less time.

That is exactly why I love this 15 minute full body workout.

Instead of wasting time on random exercises that only work one area at a time, this routine uses smart compound movements that train multiple muscle groups at once. That means your body has to work harder, your heart rate gets up faster, and your workout feels efficient from the very first move.

If you are busy, tired, overwhelmed, or simply do not want to spend forever working out, this is the kind of routine that can help you stay consistent and still get great results.

Why a 15 Minute Full Body Workout Can Work So Well

A good 15 minute full body workout is not about doing less.

It is about doing the right movements.

When you choose exercises that train your upper body, lower body, and core together, you create more demand on the body in less time. That helps make the workout feel more effective without dragging it out.

This is especially helpful for women who want to:

  • tone up without spending an hour working out
  • make home workouts feel more productive
  • get their heart rate up without relying on endless cardio
  • train more muscle groups in less time
  • stay consistent with workouts that actually fit real life

That is what makes my full body workouts so effective, especially when they use compound exercises like the ones in this routine.

Each exercise combines two moves into one exercise allowing you to maximize results and benefits in less time.

See what I mean?

15 Minute Full Body Workout Exercises

Dr. Christina Carlyle demonstrates elbows to palms plank, moving from a high plank on her hands to a forearm plank as part of a full body workout.

Elbows to Palms Plank

Start in a plank position.  Start by lowering onto your elbow and forearm on one side.  Then lower down to your elbow and forearm on the other side until you’re in a modified (on-forearm plank). Quickly push back up to the start position one side at a time.  Alternate lowering sides down to your forearms and back up into an on-palm plank until you feel the burn.  Once you feel the burn, do 5 more and stop.

Dr. Christina Carlyle demonstrates bridge and skullcrusher, lifting into a glute bridge while lowering dumbbells toward her forehead and pressing them back up.

Bridge + Skullcrusher

Lie on your back with your feet planted flat on the floor shoulder width apart.  Extend your arms up overhead with your wrists touching. This is your start position. Squeeze your abs and glutes, then lift your butt up and off the floor until your body forms a straight line. At the same time, lower your hands down towards your forehead until your elbows form a 90 angel but the weight doesn’t touch you.. Quickly lower your butt back down as you push the weights back up to the start position. Repeat the movement quickly adding up reps.

Dr. Christina Carlyle demonstrates lunge and row with dumbbells, stepping into a lunge while pulling the weights back beside her body.

Lunge + Row

Stand in a split stance, with one leg in front and the other behind you.  Hold dumbbells down close to your sides.  This is your start position.  Lower your body, lunging down until your front knee is at a 90-degree angle.  Do not let your knee extend past your toes.  As you lower, pull the weights up towards your arm pits.  Keep the weights in close to your sides as you pull them upward.  To complete the rep, exhale and quickly reverse the movement pushing through the heel and lowering the weights back down to the start position.

Dr. Christina Carlyle demonstrates plie and press with dumbbells, lowering into a wide squat while pressing the weights overhead.

Plie + Press

Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart with toes turned out.  Hold dumbbells up and out to the side of your chest with knuckles facing down. This is your start position.  Keeping your abs in tight and chest upright, lower your butt down, pushing into your heels. As you lower down, kick the weights up and out until they’re in line with your shoulders.  To complete the rep, reverse the movement, pushing up through your heels as you draw your arms back down and in to the start position.

Dr. Christina Carlyle demonstrates a single leg row, balancing on one leg while hinging forward and rowing dumbbells toward her torso.

Single Leg Row

Holding dumbbells, balance on one leg and lean over as your back leg lifts up and your arms extend down. This is your start position. Row your arms upward while keeping your elbows in close to your body. Lower your arms back down to the start position to complete one rep.

Dr. Christina Carlyle demonstrates arm and leg lifts, lying on her back with arms and legs extended and lowering them down in a controlled core exercise.

Arm and Leg Lifts

Lie on the floor, with both hands with your legs extended outward.  This is your start position.  In a fluid motion, lift your arms and legs off the ground, meeting each other, above your stomach.  Touch your arms and legs together for a count then lower your arms and legs back down.  Without letting your arms and legs touch the floor, repeat the movement quickly adding up reps until you complete your set.

Tips to Get Better Results From This 15 Minute Full Body Workout

  • Focus on form first – Because these exercises are challenging, good form matters. Move with control and do not rush just to get through the interval.
  • Use enough resistance – If the dumbbells are too light, the workout will not be nearly as effective. Choose a weight that challenges you while still allowing you to move well.
  • Do not overdo it – This workout is intense, so it does not need to be done every day. Free workouts like this should only be done once a week as part of a balanced training routine if you want to avoid plateaus and muscle memory.
  • Pair your workouts with the right nutrition – You can do the best 15 minute full body workout in the world, but if your nutrition is not right for your body, your results will still feel slower and harder than they need to. As always I recommend eating for your unique metabolic type because eating things for your type means you’re actually absorbing the nutrients. Take my Metabolic Type Quiz to learn your unique type and how food affects you.

That is why personalized nutrition matters so much.
